Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Lyrics by Tim Rice
Bath Light Operatic Group (BLOG) returns to the Theatre Royal Bath this year with the classic 1970’s rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar after their critically acclaimed production last year of South Pacific.
Inspired by the relationship between Judas and Jesus, this spectacular musical follows the last week of Jesus’ life, beginning with the preparations for his arrival in Jerusalem and ending with his crucifixion.
This was the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage. The show opened on 12th October 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre, New York with the London production opening on 9th August 1972 . By the time it closed, after some eight years and 3,358 performances, it had become the longest-running musical in West End history.
This will be the first time in Bath Light Operatic Group’s 63-year history that they have performed an Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical.
Playing the title role of Jesus is Rob Dallimore. Rob is no stranger to Bath audiences, having previously played the roles of Fagin in Oliver!, Billy Crocker in Anything Goes and Caleb in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
I am thrilled to be playing the role of Jesus. The show has a fabulous and emotive story not to mention the music and a challenging vocal score for any singer. Rob Dallimore
Joanna Finlay plays the role of Mary Magdalene, a part that has recently been played by Spice Girl Melanie C in the recent Arena Tour. This will be Joanna’s first lead role with BLOG, although she is no stranger to the stage.
Steve Bean will play the role of Judas whilst Geoff White will portray the role of Herod.
BLOG are delighted to welcome Tristan Carter as their director and David Baxter as Choreographer, alongside resident Musical Director Matthew Finch.
I have been a Musical Director for over 20 years and this is my first ever Musical Direction of an “English composed musical”. The rock music is fantastic to play and sing and a real challenge, which BLOG are rising to and achieving with spectacular results. Matthew Finch
This production contains a cast of over 35 performers ranging from 15 years old to 70 years old, who live in Bath and its surrounding areas of Midsomer Norton, Trowbridge, Bradford on Avon and Saltford. The show times are Tues – Sat 19:30 and Wed/Sat 14:30; tickets start from £15.
This really is an opportunity for an audience to see BLOG in the Theatre Royal producing something new, fresh and exciting.
